FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on his X account that the FBI is investigating the swatting incidents targeting media figures over the past couple of weeks. Swatting is an illegal activity where usually anonymous reports are made to police stating serious and often violent crimes by a public figure. These fake reports often lead to large teams of police activity at the victim’s home and are extremely dangerous as the victims are unaware of the reports and the police are highly armed.
Over the last few weeks, several people have reported being swatted, and many have posted videos and their experiences on social media. Larry Taunton, author and columnist, announced on March 17th, that he was swatted overnight, and posted videos on X of his experience and police showing up at his home with their weapons ready and armed.
Other public officials have been swatted, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Green, last December, when a false bomb threat was directed at her home.
As of March 17th, there is no recent news on FBI.gov that states that these issues are being directly addressed, and since Director Patel’s address on X a few days ago, no new public information has been released regarding the swatting incidents. Meanwhile, since the post from Director Patel, several more prominent figures have stated that they have been swatted.
We will continue to follow this story as more unfolds.
